A Local's Guide to Ghirardelli Square & the Waterfront

About 12 minutes on foot from the club

Ghirardelli Square in San Francisco at dusk, with its historic brick buildings, fountain, and string lights overlooking Aquatic Park and Alcatraz

Ghirardelli Square is the 1893 chocolate factory turned landmark plaza — brick buildings, a fountain, string lights, and a front-row view of Aquatic Park and Alcatraz. It's touristy in the best way: the sundaes are real, and so is the history.

From Russian Hill Cannabis Club at 2424 Polk Street, it's a 12-minute walk west toward the water — an easy add-on to any Russian Hill visit.

What to see & do

The Original Ghirardelli Ice Cream & Chocolate Shop

The reason everyone comes: hot fudge sundaes built in the old factory building. The line moves faster than it looks, and the free chocolate square at the door softens the wait.

Aquatic Park

The cove just below the square — a small beach, a curved pier, and swimmers doing laps in the bay year-round. The bleachers at the waterfront are one of the city's best sunset seats.

Hyde Street Pier

A floating fleet of historic ships at the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park — walk the pier for free and board the 1886 square-rigger Balclutha.

The Buena Vista

The bar across from the cable car turnaround that introduced Irish coffee to America in 1952. They make them by the dozen, and they're still the benchmark.

Powell–Hyde cable car turnaround

The line's northern terminus at Hyde and Beach — watch the operators spin the car around by hand on the turntable.

Where to eat & drink

  • Ghirardelli sundaes — the obvious one, and worth it.
  • The Buena Vista — Irish coffee, as it has been since 1952.
  • Fisherman's Wharf is five minutes further west if you want clam chowder in a sourdough bowl.
  • Picnic option: grab supplies on Polk Street before you walk over and eat on the Aquatic Park bleachers.

Getting there

From the club, walk west on Union Street and drop down toward the water — about 12 minutes. The Powell–Hyde cable car also ends right at the square.

The waterfront is flat and connects easily to Fisherman's Wharf, the Maritime Museum, and the Fort Mason center further west.

Local tips

  • Sunset at the Aquatic Park bleachers is the move — bring a layer, the wind off the bay is cold even in summer.
  • The chocolate shop line is shortest right at opening.
  • Hyde Street Pier ships have limited hours; the pier itself and the views are free anytime.
  • Combine it with a walk up Fort Mason's Great Meadow for a quieter Golden Gate view.
