18 minutes on foot
A Local's Guide to North Beach, San Francisco
About 18 minutes on foot from the club

North Beach is San Francisco's Little Italy — a neighborhood of sidewalk espresso, old-school delis, Beat Generation history, and the green expanse of Washington Square. It's lively day and night, and it pairs naturally with a Russian Hill afternoon.
From Russian Hill Cannabis Club at 2424 Polk Street, head east — it's about 18 minutes on foot, mostly flat once you're off the hill.
What to see & do
Washington Square
The neighborhood's front lawn — one of the city's oldest parks, fronted by the white twin spires of Saints Peter and Paul Church. Grab a coffee and a bench and watch the tai chi crowd in the morning.
City Lights Bookstore
The legendary independent bookstore founded by poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti in 1953, publisher of Allen Ginsberg's Howl. Three floors of browsing on Columbus Avenue, still going strong.
Coit Tower
The 210-foot tower on Telegraph Hill with 1930s murals inside and a wraparound view of the bay. The walk up the Filbert Steps — through gardens and past cottages — is half the fun.
The Beat Museum
A small, heartfelt museum on Broadway dedicated to Kerouac, Ginsberg, and the Beat Generation — a good companion stop to City Lights across the alley.
Columbus Avenue
The neighborhood's main diagonal, lined with cafes, bakeries, and bars. This is the stroll — no plan required.
Where to eat & drink
- Caffe Trieste — the 1956 espresso institution where the Beats wrote and opera still breaks out on Saturdays.
- Liguria Bakery — focaccia and only focaccia, sold from a bare storefront on Washington Square since 1911. It sells out; go early.
- Tony's Pizza Napoletana — award-winning pies in a dozen styles, on the square.
- Molinari Delicatessen — a classic Italian deli on Columbus for a sandwich to take to the park.
Getting there
From the club, walk east on Union or Green Street toward Columbus — about 18 minutes. The 45 and 30 buses also connect the corridor.
North Beach sits between Russian Hill, Chinatown, and Fisherman's Wharf, so it's easy to string several neighborhoods into one walk.
Local tips
- Liguria Bakery closes when the focaccia sells out — often by early afternoon.
- The Filbert Steps to Coit Tower are steep but shaded and beautiful; the 39 bus goes up if you'd rather save your legs.
- City Lights stays open late — it's a great last stop of the evening.
- Parking is genuinely hard here. Walk, bus, or rideshare.
